Try to know a Chinese herb 13— Rhodiola rosea

What is Rhodiola rosea

Rhodiola is a perennial herb or shrub plant in the sedum family, growing in highland areas around the world, and is a commonly used traditional medicine in Asia, which has the effects of stimulating the nervous system, increasing work efficiency, eliminating fatigue and preventing mountain sickness.

More than 200 varieties of Rhodiola Rosea have been identified, of which approximately 20 are commonly used in traditional Asian medicine, such as Rhodiola rosea, Rhodiola macrolitum, Rhodiola rosea, and Rhodiola rosea. Rhodiola rosea, in particular, has been extensively studied. In the sixties of the twentieth century, Soviet scientists discovered that it had an adaptogenic effect and could help the body to return to homeostasis. This means that Rhodiola Rosea improves the body's resistance to various stimuli from chemical, biological, or physical factors. In addition to traditional anti-stress functions, scientists have focused on some new discoveries, including anti-cancer and anti-diabetic research.

Traditional utility

Rhodiola Rosea has a long history of use, and more than 2,000 years ago, people on the Tibetan plateau used it as a medicine to strengthen their bodies and resist the effects of adverse environments. Folk often use it to fry water or soak wine to relieve fatigue or resist mountain cold. If the oxygen content of the human body is insufficient, symptoms of hypoxia will occur, including headache, tiredness, difficulty breathing, dizziness, etc., and severe or sudden will lead to coma and even death. In general, this phenomenon often occurs in highland areas, leading to altitude sickness and even some fatal complications.

Hypoxia is a stressful stimulus that causes a series of stress responses in the body. The adaptogenic effect of Rhodiola Rosea can improve the body's non-specific low resistance to harmful stimuli and strengthen the body's adaptability. By enhancing oxygen diffusion in cells in the body, or oxygen use benefits, or antioxidant capacity, Rhodiola Rosea helps improve the body's resilience to hypoxic stimuli. Rhodiola rosea

Modern pharmacology

1.Enhances athletic endurance

Rhodiola Rosea has always been a sporting accessory that enhances or maintains athletes' endurance during competition or training. Animal experiments have proved that mice taking Rhodiola rosea extract can significantly extend the long-distance swimming time and stimulate the synthesis or resynthesis of glandular triphosphorus (ATP) in intracellular mitochondria. This synthesis of high-energy molecules is the main energy source for most cellular functions, and it is also indispensable for movement and breathing.

The results showed that although the amount of ATP in mitochondria decreased in the control group and the experimental group of Rhodiola Rosea, the rate of reduction was less significant than that of mice fed Rhodiola rosea. This means that Rhodiola rosea stimulates ATP synthesis or resynthesis during muscle exercise, helping to enhance physical performance and promote recovery after strenuous exercise.

2.Antioxidant, anti-diabetic, anti-pneumonia and asthma

Studies have pointed out that oxidation plays an important role in the development of many diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, neurodegeneration and rheumatoid arthritis. In traditional medicine, Rhodiola Rosea is also used to treat diabetes. The experiment used mice to test Rhodiola Rosea's glycemic index, enzymes, and antioxidant activities in controlling type 2 diabetes.

Rhodiola rosea has been shown to effectively lower blood sugar and accelerate antioxidant activity. Suggests that Rhodiola Rosea may be useful in preventing hyperglycemia.

Rhodiola Rosea has been clinically shown to significantly combat pneumonia and asthma. Effective for allergic asthma, the general adult can use 15---30 grams per day, decoction, half a month 1 course of treatment, you can increase the course of treatment according to the needs of the condition.

3.Anti-cancer properties

Some reports indicate that Rhodiola Rosea has anti-cancer and anti-mutation abilities, and its anti-cancer mechanism lies in cell growth cycle control and apoptosis. A 2006 study showed that Rhodiola Rosea inhibits the division process of HL-60 blood cancer cells and reduces their chances of survival. In addition, Rhodiola Rosea directly inhibits the growth and spread of lung cancer cells.
